Hello. I am Marieke Blokland (1980) a.k.a. Bloknote.nl, a visual artist, designer and illustrator from the Netherlands.
“I love art supplies. Experimenting and playing with paints. I mainly work in mixed media techniques combining water colors, acrylics, paper collage, ink, acrylic mediums, color pencils, wax crayons and pens.
As a result of my background in illustration, graphic design and crafts, I often wonder, while drawing and painting: what is art? I’m looking for the borders where craft, illustration, design, folk art, visual and conceptual art meet one another.
The designer and illustrator in me are not shy to use pretty patterns, flowers and other decorative, graphical elements, purely to please the eye.”
– Marieke Blokland, 2017
In 2013 I graduated at the Academy of Arts St. Joost in Breda in 2003. Graphic design / visual communication is what I studied. After my study I worked as a marketeer specialized in visual marketing at a large retailer of art and craft supplies.
I am the daughter of a children’s book illustrator and a carpenter. Therefore I had access to lots of high quality art supplies while growing up. My mum taught me I could create my own world on paper. I’ve always adored her work. Since my father was the chairman of the local builders union and active member of a Dutch socialistic party during my youth, I was taught that it is important to have a strong opinion. He taught me to stand for my believes.
My ‘oma’ (grandmother) was an important person for me too. She was a Polish-Ukrainian seamstress, who made fabric tapestries, often with a religious themes or Ukrainian landscapes. Her work showed great craftsmanship and pictured a lot of Polish, Russian and Ukrainian folklore elements. As a kid I admired these kitschy tapestries, with their lace, glass beads and golden threads.
At present I work full time under the name of Bloknote as an independent artist, illustrator, designer, videographer and painter. Also I teach online art classes to a group of enthusiastic artists and crafters from all over the world at my online school BloknoteAcademy.
About my art
Because of my background in illustration, graphic design and craft, I often wonder, while drawing and painting: what is art? When is something art and when not? I’m looking for the borders where craft, illustration, design, folk art, amateur art, visual and conceptual art meet one another.
Other big themes that are important to me in my art are Self Expression, Symbols and Icons, Utopia and Dystopia, Power and Oppression, Aphrodite and Androgyny, Searching and Hiding.
At the moment my ‘quest’ becomes visual in my drawings and paintings of dolls. I study figures from various disciplines, continents and artistic trends. From early Christian icons to ancient Japanese woodcuts, from children’s books illustrations to outsider art, from Russian folk art to urban art. And from cartoon characters to the drawings of my own children.
I love art supplies. Experimenting and playing with paint. I mainly work in mixed media techniques combining water colors, acrylics, paper collage, inks, acrylic mediums, color pencils, wax crayons and pens. Layer upon layer I build my images.
Besides an artist I am also an online entrepreneur teaching online art classes in my online mixed media school www.bloknoteacademy.com. I believe that self expression through art is our human nature. For me the perfect medium for self expression is working in an art journal. Hence the sub line: online mixed media & art journaling school.
Art Journaling is my big passion. Art what? Art Journaling is keeping a creative diary in which you stick pretty images, draw, paint, doodle, write, illustrate or make a mess. Why? Because it is fun! Plus art journaling is a powerful tool to clear my mind and express myself artistically, visually and emotionally.
I have 2 books published: “Art Journaling & Mixed Media” and “Handlettering & Doodles”, both from Kosmos Publishers. Read more about my books here.

In an art journal everything is possible. And everything is allowed. Cut, paste, sketch, paint, mark or scratch. Use for example pencils, chalk, acrylics, water colors, pens or paper. Mixing all those drawing and painting techniques is called mixed media.
